in Nevada. Winds carried the poisoning southeast covering the city
of Las Vegas, 100 miles away....

This of course is the headline we never want to see.....BUT!!!

Scientists discount ground water problem
at Yucca Mountain

State officials say serious problems exist
at a planned nuclear waste storage site,
despite a panel's conclusion.

WASHINGTON -- A presidential panel
of scientists has concluded there is no
evidence to support a former federal
geologist's theory that ground water rises
at Yucca Mountain, making it unsafe for
nuclear waste storage.
The Nuclear Waste Technical Review
Board criticized the findings of Jerry
Szymanski "because of the pervasive
presence of unsubstantiated
interpretations."
The board reviewed 11 reports
submitted by Szymanski in January 1997.
Several of the reports were written by
Yuri Dublyanksy, a geochemist for the
Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of
Sciences.
Additional material provided by the
office of Nevada Attorney General Frankie
Sue Del Papa also was reviewed.
In a response released Friday, the
board detailed three conclusions:
--The reviewed material does not
make a credible case that there is
ongoing, intermittent ground water
activity at Yucca Mountain or that large
earthquake-induced changes in the
mountain's water table are likely. --------Meaning it could happen!
--While additional research on Yucca
Mountain's ground water activity may be
useful, it should be given lower priority
than other important issues regarding the
performance of a nuclear waste repository.

--To resolve the ground water issue,
federal and Nevada scientists should work
together to determine if fluids reached
elevated temperatures at Yucca Mountain
within the last 100,000 years. -------------What? 100,000 years!!!
"It's nonsense," Szymanski said of
the board's conclusions. "I think it shows
how far this nation has gone down the road
to (building a nuclear waste repository
at) Yucca Mountain, and they feel there is
no way out."
The Department of Energy hopes to
open a repository at Yucca Mountain to
store highly radioactive spent fuel rods
from nuclear reactors by the year 2010.
The technical review board oversees the
department's studies of the mountain, 100
miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Del Papa questioned the board's
objectivity even though four independent
scientists served as consultants.
"Obviously, we're disappointed," she
said. "We were hoping the board would be
independent enough to do an independent
review. We intend to stay the course
because we're strongly convinced there are
serious problems related to this site."
This was not the first time
Szymanski's theory has been reviewed. In
1992, a 17-member panel of the National
Academy of Sciences unanimously concluded
there was no evidence to suggest water has
risen within Yucca Mountain.
Rising ground water could disqualify
Yucca Mountain as a repository site
because the water could corrode waste
containers and carry off their potentially
deadly radioactive contaminants into the
environment.
Even though Dublyanksy's research
appeared to confirm Szymanski's theory,
the technical review board said the new
reports do not "significantly affect the
conclusions" of the National Academy of
Sciences panel in 1992.
"Although the data generally appear
to be of good quality, often there is poor
or insufficient documentation of important
details," the board said.
The board's consultants cited the
"apparent selective use of information ...
Important dissenting information is not
mentioned or discussed."
Szymanski defended the accuracy of
the reports. "There is no scientific doubt
regarding the validity of our findings or
the validity of my suspicions when I was
with DOE," he said.
Szymanski resigned from the Energy
Department's Yucca Mountain Project in
1992 following a dispute over the
project's scientific integrity. He now
works as a consultant to the attorney
general's office, which hopes to collect
scientific evidence for legal battles
against the Energy Department.

What is Yucca Mountain?

Over the past 15 years, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has been studying a site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, to determine whether it is a suitable place to build a geologic repository for the Nation's spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste

Yucca Mountain is located about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. Yucca Mountain is on the edge of the Nation's nuclear weapons test site, where more than 900 nuclear tests have been conducted. This unpopulated land is owned by the federal government.

Yucca Mountain is a flat-topped ridge running six miles from north to south that has changed little over the last million years. Based upon what is known about the site, disruption of a repository at Yucca Mountain by volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, or other geologic processes and events appears to be extraordinarily unlikely.

Yucca Mountain has a desert climate. This is important because water movement is the primary means by which radioactive waste could be transported from a repository to the accessible environment. On average, Yucca Mountain currently receives about seven inches of rain and snow per year. Nearly all the precipitation, about 95 percent, either runs off or evaporates. Geological information indicates that the regional climate has scarcely changed over the past million years, and the long-term average precipitation has been about 12 inches per year (comparable to that of present - day Santa Fe, New Mexico). Even if this were to be the case in the future, it is believed that most of the water would run off or evaporate rather than soak into the ground and possibly reach the repository.

A repository would be built about 1,000 feet below the surface and 1,000 feet above the water table. Any precipitation that does not run off or evaporate at the surface would have to seep down nearly 1,000 feet before reaching the repository and through another 1,000 feet of solid, dry rock before reaching the water table. The groundwater in the region is trapped and does not flow into any rivers that reach the ocean.
