Superhighway? WHAT superhighway?

 The NAFTA Superhighway

By now many Texans have heard about the proposed “NAFTA Superhighway,” which is also referred to as the trans-Texas corridor. What you may not know is the extent to which plans for such a superhighway are moving forward without congressional oversight or media attention.

This superhighway would connect Mexico, the United States, and Canada, cutting a wide swath through the middle of Texas and up through Kansas City. Offshoots would connect the main artery to the west coast, Florida, and northeast. Proponents envision a ten-lane colossus the width of several football fields, with freight and rail lines, fiber-optic cable lines, and oil and natural gas pipelines running alongside.

This will require coordinated federal and state eminent domain actions on an unprecedented scale, as literally millions of people and businesses could be displaced. The loss of whole communities is almost certain, as planners cannot wind the highway around every quaint town, historic building, or senior citizen apartment for thousands of miles.

Governor Perry is a supporter of the superhighway project, and Congress has provided small amounts of money to study the proposal. Since this money was just one item in an enormous transportation appropriations bill, however, most members of Congress were not aware of it.

The proposed highway is part of a broader plan advanced by a quasi-government organization called the “Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America,” or SPP.

The SPP was first launched in 2005 by the heads of state of Canada, Mexico, and the United States at a summit in Waco.

The SPP was not created by a treaty between the nations involved, nor was Congress involved in any way. Instead, the SPP is an unholy alliance of foreign consortiums and officials from several governments. One principal player is a Spanish construction company, which plans to build the highway and operate it as a toll road. But don’t be fooled: the superhighway proposal is not the result of free market demand, but rather an extension of government-managed trade schemes like NAFTA that benefit politically-connected interests.

The real issue is national sovereignty. Once again, decisions that affect millions of Americans are not being made by those Americans themselves, or even by their elected representatives in Congress. Instead, a handful of elites use their government connections to bypass national legislatures and ignore our Constitution – which expressly grants Congress the sole authority to regulate international trade.

The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway, but an integrated North American Union – complete with a currency, a cross-national bureaucracy, and virtually borderless travel within the Union. Like the European Union, a North American Union would represent another step toward the abolition of national sovereignty altogether.

A new resolution, introduced by Representative Virgil Goode of Virginia, expresses the sense of Congress that the United States should not engage in the construction of a NAFTA superhighway, or enter into any agreement that advances the concept of a North American Union. I wholeheartedly support this legislation, and predict that the superhighway will become a sleeper issue in the 2008 election...

A couple of researchers and I are suspicious of the raid on that village of fundamentalist Mormons.  The pretext of the raid is very similar to Waco. 

 

A friend has done a little research and found that the village appears to be in the path of the Ports-to-Plains high priority corridor.  Below that, I included an email where she mailed me the Ports-to-Plains map.

Texas Rangers participated in the arrest of a Colorado woman who allegedly pretended to be a girl locked in a basement. The Rangers were in the state as part of their investigation into the Texas polygamy custody battle, local police told ABC News.

It was unclear if the arrest was related to the phone call from a woman who claimed to be a 16-year-old girl, a phone call that sparked what has become one of the largest child custody cases in U.S. history.

Officials in Texas raided a polygamist compound and took 416 children into custody after an abuse hotline received a series of phone calls from the purported teen who said she was being held at the compound. The girl, who called herself Sarah, said she was being physically and sexually abused by her adult husband, court documents say.

Texas child protection lawyers have said they believe the girl does exist, even though they have not found her.

But ABC News has learned that Texas Rangers flew to Colorado Springs, Colo., and participated in the arrest of a 33-year-old woman who was charged with filing a false report.

The FBI also told ABC News it is assisting local police in the investigation. Colorado Springs police said in a statement that "The Texas Rangers were in Colorado Springs Wednesday as part of their investigation involving the compound in Texas."  http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/story?id=4678143&page=1

* A temple rises: In November 2003, the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints purchases property for its 1,691-acre YFZ Ranch outside Eldorado, Texas. A limestone temple and homes are built.
    * The raid begins: Authorities enter the ranch April 3, 2008, with arrest and search warrants based on a March 31 call from 16-year-old girl who claimed she had been abused by a 50-year-old man.
    * Breaching the temple: Authorities use a hydraulic tool to pry open the door of the massive limestone temple inside the FLDS compound. Officials act on a search warrant granted by a judge after a confidential source claims adult men were having sex with underage brides in the temple.

Eldorado was not Waco. And much of the credit goes to Doran, whose relationship with sect members turned out to be, as Mange puts it, "the difference between things going well and things going badly."
Randy Mankin, editor of the local newspaper, the Eldorado Success, is a little more blunt.
"He kept this from being a fiasco," Mankin said.
He said the sheriff and Texas Ranger Capt. Barry Caver "talked their way in and they talked their way out. God, if somebody would have thought to do that in Waco, you know?"
In 1993, failed attempts to arrest Branch Davidian leader David Koresh for stockpiling weapons led to a shootout near Waco that killed four federal agents and six followers. The 51-day standoff that followed ended in a deadly blaze that claimed the lives of 90 followers.
Doran's office says he's not doing interviews for a while, and I don't blame him if he's got a bad case of reporter fatigue. Even Mankin, who counts the sheriff among his best friends, said he's on the waiting list for an on-record interview.
For the past few years, it can't have been easy for Doran to keep his cool under that white cowboy hat.
Ever since members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints began moving into his neck of West Texas in 2004, the sheriff has taken heat — especially during two bids for re-election — from some locals for not doing more to protect the rumored victims of sex abuse, forced marriage and child labor behind the YFZ Ranch's eight-foot fence.
To some locals, it was like the devil had come to town. They feared the sect would flood schools and assemble voting strength to take over county government.
But Doran isn't the swaggering, guns a-blazin' stereotype of the rural Texas sheriff. His pastor, Andy Anderson at Eldorado's First Baptist Church, says, "he has a reputation for making sure his ducks are in a row."
For the past four years, Doran kept an open line of communication with the sect, built a basic rapport, seemed to earn the respect of elders — all the while, keeping a watchful eye on the compound with a pair of binoculars during frequent stakeouts.
When the sect's spiritual leader, Warren Jeffs, was arrested in Nevada in 2006 after a stint on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list, Doran called up the compound and informed his followers personally.
Doran met with sect elders early on and informed them of, among other things, Texas law against the taking of a spiritual or "celestial bride" who is underage. Of course, sect members weren't always as honest and straightforward with Doran as he tried to be.
They told him they no longer tolerated the practice of underage marriages. By the look of some of the pregnant girls streaming out of the compound this month, that doesn't sound entirely true.
At the start, sect members claimed they were building a hunting retreat until, after the construction of several more buildings, they acknowledged it was a religious retreat for FLDS true believers, not to exceed 200. Of course, authorities took more than twice that amount of women and children into custody during the raid.
Recently, when it was revealed that the sheriff had maintained a confidential informant who supplied him with information about the goings-on at the YFZ Ranch, the sheriff was under fire again for not acting on the information.
Although he was one of the few outsiders allowed inside the compound, he has said that he rarely saw many of the sect's members.
"He was aware of a lot of things that were happening," Mange said. "But until you have someone making an outcry or until you see right in front of your face a crime that's being committed, there's not a great deal that we can do."
In the end, the sheriff was right to wait.
"He knew this day was coming, and he wanted to be prepared for it," says Mankin, who adds that he intends to fully explore the sheriff's perspective in a screenplay.

Rick Perry Pardons CPS Kidnapping

Texas Governor Rick Perry has opined on the CPS YFZ disaster. What would Mr. Perry have to say to the hundreds of children who were wrongfully taken from their parents?

If responsibility needs to be taken for [court edicts] saying that we stepped across some legal line, I'll certainly take that responsibility," Mr. Perry said. “I am substantially less interested in these fine legal lines that we're discussing than I am about these children's welfare, that's where my focus is. That's where CPS' focus is."

How could someone call the law that protects parents from having their children arbitrarily stolen by CPS a "fine legal line"? Statist apologetics are built upon the tyranny of good intentions. Mr. Perry readily endorses this illegal compound raid based on phony evidence, sloppy police work, and religious profiling because CPS meant well.

Rick has also taken it upon himself to accept responsibility for one of the worst bureaucratic disasters in Texas history. If I was responsible for the YFZ disaster I would have the decency to resign.
