Dead In The Water - The Sinking of the USS Liberty

Those who consider it unthinkable that the UNITED STATES government and the
ISRAELI government would fake a terror attack killing thousands to initiate
a war to benefit those controlling these governments should listen to the
sound track of the LOSS OF LIBERTY (Direct link for download:

It will take 2 hours to download with a 56k modem but it is worth it. This is
the account of how the 1967 WAR was started wherein all the Palestinian lands
now in dispute were taken and how Israel tried to sink an American ship and
blame it on the Egyptians. The US government was clearly a party to this

During the Six Day War between Israel and the Arab States, the American
intelligence ship USS Liberty was attacked for 75 minutes in international
waters by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats. Thirty-four men died
and 172 were wounded.

The attack has been a matter of controversy ever since. Survivors and many
key government officials including Secretary of State Dean Rusk and former
JCS Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer say it was no accident. Israel and its
supporters insist it was a "tragic case of misidentification" and charge
that the survivors are either lying or too emotionally involved to see the

Israel claims they mistook our ship for the out-of-service Egyptian horse
carrier El Quseir and that we brought the attack upon ourselves by
operating in a war zone without displaying a flag. Not so. We were in
international waters, far from any fighting, and flew a bright, clean, new
American flag. The flag we flew is on display at the National Cryptologic
Museum, Fort Meade, Maryland and can be seen there, or in the USS Liberty
Images Archive.

Our commanding officer, Captain William Loren McGonagle, received the
Congressional Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepedity at
the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty during the attack.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award our country can
bestow. To avoid embarrassing our attackers, Captain McGonagle's Medal of
Honor was presented in a quiet ceremony in the Washington Navy Yard
instead of in the White House by the President as is customary.

The USS Liberty Web Page presents part of the story along with some
historical information and links to other sources.

Yet the most pressing question remaining from that infamy is not whether
the attack was deliberate.  That was settled long ago for most
reasonable people. The question is why Israel risked its cozy
relationship with America by killing American seaman on the high seas.

His brother died a hero on the ship's bridge when Israeli forces launched
an unprovoked aircraft and torpedo attack on the USS Liberty during the
Six Day War with Egypt in 1967.

>From Admiral Thomas H. Moorer:
I have never believed that the attack on the USS Liberty was
a case of mistaken identity. That is ridiculous. I have
flown over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, thousands of
hours, searching for ships and identifying all types of
ships at sea. The Liberty was the ugliest, strangest looking
ship in the U.S. Navy. As a communications intelligence
ship, it was sprouting every kind of antenna. It looked like
a lobster with all those projections moving every which way.

As survivors have frequently pointed out, Liberty men were not permitted
to speak freely and were directed to reply only to the questions asked.
Some men who wished to testify were not permitted to do so. George Golden,
who was the second ranking man to survive the attack, was severely limited
in the testimony he was permitted to provide. Jim Ennes, who was Officer
of the Deck during most of the daylight reconnaissance and could
personally testify to the closeness and frequency of overflying aircraft
and other key details, provided a sworn statement from his hospital bed,
but this statement was not permitted into evidence. Jim's hand-written
deck logs for his watch were key evidence, but they were not entered into
the record. Instead, they were rewritten and signed by someone else, which
is a violation of Navy Regulations.
