~~FOR YOUR INFORMATION - RESEARCH/EDUCATION PURPOSES ONLY~~

"Mr. Cheney's wife, Dr. Lynne V. Cheney, is well-known as an eloquent
defender of America's traditional cultural ideals. After serving as chairman
of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Dr. Cheney led the fight to
reject the imposition of ideologically biased U.S. history standards on the
nation's public schools -- standards that embraced every fever and fad of the
politically correct Left, while denigrating or omitting altogether vital core
elements of our national history and values.

Dr. Lynne V. Cheney served two terms as chairman of the National Endowment for the
Humanities, the independent federal agency that supports education, research,
preservation and public programs in the humanities.

Under Cheney's leadership, the Endowment launched programs aimed at improving
education in America's schools, colleges and universities. Also under her leadership,
the NEH provided major support for "The Civil War", a now-classic documentary
miniseries.

Cheney has written and spoken about American education and the value of
the humanities to one's professional and personal life. She has been
featured on television news programs and her articles have appeared in
The New York Times, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal and many more.

Before the NEH, Cheney taught at colleges and universities, was a
magazine editor and a widely published author. She has written two novels
and co-authored a third. With her husband, former Secretary of Defense
Richard B. Cheney, she wrote a history of the House of Representatives. A
native of Wyoming, Cheney earned her bachelor's degree with highest
honors from Colorado College and a master's degree from the University of
Colorado. Her doctoral degree, with a specialization in 19th century British
literature, is from the University of Wisconsin. She also holds more than a
dozen honorary degrees.

Dr. Lynne V. Cheney is the author of "Telling The Truth," host of CNN's
"Sunday Crossfire" and former chairman for the National Endowment for the
Humanities. The title of her address at Concordia is "Telling The Truth." Dr.
Cheney, who has championed school choice, emphasizes the way in which
virtues long esteemed in American culture provide a necessary foundation for
learning. "Honesty and hard work matter, and we must tell our children why
these ideas are important," said Cheney.

Telling the Truth: Why Our Culture and Our Country Have Stopped
Making Sense--and What We Can Do about It
By Lynne V. Cheney
[snip]
Might Makes Right?

What I gradually came to understand was that in the view of a growing number of
academics, the truth was not merely irrelevant; it no longer existed. They had
moved far beyond the ideas that have shaped modern scholarship--that we should
think of the truth we hold today as tentative and partial, recognizing that it
may require rethinking tomorrow in light of new information and insight--to the
view that there is no truth. They had leapt beyond the commonsense observation
that people's descriptions of reality differ to the conclusion that there is no
independent reality, and thus no basis for making judgments about truth--or falsity.
As these academics saw it, all those things that we think are true are merely the
constructs of dominant groups, the creations of the powerful. Might makes right,
in other words; and so intimidation was a perfectly natural way to try to gain
assent. Politics was writ large because, in their view, there was no countervailing
force. For ordering information, call 1-800-937-5557

Politics in the Classroom
by Lynne Cheney
(Excerpted from her book Telling the Truth: Why our culture and our
country have stopped making sense--and what we can do about it.)

"Multicultural education may well be incompatible with patriotism, if patriotism
means belief in the nation's superiority over other nations....
The advantage to the nation of multicultural education thus may be increased
reluctance to wage all-out war."

Disagreeable Truths - By Nick Gillespie
[snip]
Cheney, a Ph.D. in English, a former chairman of the National Endowment for
the Humanities, and a current fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, doesn't
think so, especially regarding the "truth," a term much easier to invoke than it is
to describe with any great clarity. Again using the Englishman as an authority,
Cheney writes, "As George Orwell showed in a world where objective truth is denied,
definitions become exceedingly slippery; and anything can mean almost anything else."
The result of the "postmodern" rejection of objective truth is the breakdown of
"culture" and "country" alluded to in her subtitle, writes Cheney, who calls for
nothing less than the intellectual equivalent of total war in the battle for "truth."
"The virtues that we have increasingly come to believe we must nurture if w e are
to be successful as a culture simply make no sense if we turn away from reason and
reality. Thus, whether we as a society find the will to live in truth is more than
a matter for idle speculation. The answer may very well determine whether we survive

Whittaker Chambers made a point of becoming acquainted with Alger Hiss in 1934.
At that time, some considered Chambers to be a German spy.(33) Using techniques
of imported masters of espionage, plans were being made at that time to discredit
Alger Hiss. By waiting several years, Hiss could be strategically occupied in
various Government services. John Foster Dulles was instrumental in placing Hiss
as head of the Carnegie Foundation, a group associated with peace and the United
Nations.

Like a vast picture thronged with figures of equal prominence and crowded with
elaborate and obtrusive details, Congress is hard to see satisfactorily and
appreciatively at a single view and from a single stand-point. Its complicated
forms and diversified structure confuse the vision, and conceal the system
which underlies its composition. It is too complex to be understood without
effort, without a careful and systematic process of analysis.
